Sadly, you won't be arriving on a Malév aeroplane, and you won't be arriving at the old Ferihegy Airport. (The national airline went bankrupt and this original airport terminal is closed.)
But if you're curious about Hungary beyond the obvious tourist sites, there's still plenty to experience. The statues from the communist days were all removed to the Statue Park and you'll find plenty of interesting things as soon as you walk down any backstreet in the city.
If you're interested in an authentic (not a tourist version) Communist Tour and maybe even a fun hour spent learning a few phrases of Hungarian in a café where you can ask all your questions about life in the 80s, then try Fungarian.
And if you're looking for an authentic 80s eating experience, in a red-star shaped bistro where not only the food, but every detail mirrors what we lived with during this period - including huge portions of great food - then try the Pántlika Bistro in the City Park. (There are also lots of retro items displayed, many of which can be bought!)
For the most comprehensive website on Budapest to help you plan your stay, go to https://welovebudapest.com/ which features information about travelling to Budapest (flights, trains, coaches), accommodation in Budapest (hotels, hostels, guest houses, B&Bs), sightseeing, Budapest nightlife (restaurants, bars, clubs) and ideas for things to do and things to see in Budapest and Hungary.
