So what was it like, living in communist Hungary of the 80s?
Almost nothing you can now see in the shops was available back then. The Forint was a 'soft' currency that couldn't be converted - the precious dollars the state had were reserved for buying things they thought necessary, but which they couldn't produce: lemons, coffee, tea... Everything else was either made in Hungary or imported from the other Soviet bloc countries.
