There were few tourists in the 80s and almost none from outside the communist bloc. Minuscule numbers of party-faithful Russians could occasionally be seen through the windows of their tour coaches, to which they were confined. Poles came to sell their personal possessions for goods unavailable in Poland, and East Germans flocked to Lake Balaton - the only place where they were able to meet up with their West German relatives.
