The pages in this section will give an idea of what Hungarian communist society was like; it was often described as the happiest barrack in the bloc, or even as Goulash communism, and it should be remembered that just as every EU country is different (although they are all capitalist) so every soviet bloc country was also different from its neighbours.

With its five-year economic plans, with Marxism-Leninism compulsory in all its schools and universities, and with its centrally controlled economy and media, Hungary was "building socialism". No-one seemed entirely sure when it would be finished - it was definitely work in progress.
