80s' Weather
In a decade when winters were characterised by months of snow and ice (unlike today) there were two winters that stood out for their severity: that of 1984, and the 1986-87 winter. In both these years the Danube froze over completely. In 1987, the whole city was brought to a complete standstill when no transport ran for several days and food deliveries could not be made to shops.
Below are some photographs from 1987 - the midday temperature can be seen in the image taken at Nyugati station, as can the absence of any car, bus or tram!
